Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is a fairly recent method of treating large and small diseased veins not visible on the surface simply by injection of a solution under ultrasound guidance.   Not long ago these veins had to be treated by vein stripping requiring an expensive hospital stay and lengthy recuperation.

This method uses duplex ultrasound scanning to accurately locate incompetent subsurface veins and then guide the needle to allow safe injection of veins which could not otherwise be treated.

Compression stockings are then worn for two to three weeks to compress the treated veins and allow healing. There is no down time, and normal activities are pursued.  Office follow up is required to monitor effectiveness of treatment.  There may be small collections of trapped blood which are drained by needle punctures.  Additional ultrasound guided injections to complete closure may be required.
